Peder Hiort, who was director of the Røros Copper Works in the 18th century, bequeathed his entire fortune to the poor of Røros - a will which is characterized as one of the wisest donations in the Nordics, as it showed a unique foresight and a social responsibility which still has its justification today in other parts of the world.

Røros Tweed is a continuation of the Hiort Foundation's Homework business, it began with weaving courses in 1938, where the textiles were produced in people's private homes, later investments were made in machines, and everything was transferred to factory production.

The factory's production is now concentrated on textiles of 100% pure new wool, with designs inspired by the cultural heritage and the fascinating high mountain nature of Røros.
