In the tumultuous and contradictory period after the First World War, a fascination with the American model of society arises in Germany. Streamlining the work processes is imported to German companies and leads to rapid mechanization and industrialization.

But the fascination of the industry collides with the harsh reality that characterizes the everyday lives of the poorest groups of the population. Several artists in the significant artistic movement of the period in Germany, Neue Sachlichkeit - The New Reality or Objectivity - exhibit the reverse side of triumphant capitalism and depict the daily life of poor workers in industry - and at home in unsafe and cramped housing on the outskirts of modern cities.

Painters and photographers find inspiration in the reportage genre and use its analytical method. Here the painter Oskar Nerlinger portrays anonymous groups of workers in the industry that the artists found most benefited the well-to-do.
