From prehistoric art, the journey goes through antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to modern art trends, such as Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism and on to contemporary art.

When the book was first published, it was nominated for Weekendavisen's Literature Prize 2014. This new edition contains more than 30 new drawings and the selection of artists has been expanded with a focus on female artists and a generally greater diversity.

The book also contains a timetable and a glossary, both of which are illustrated.
