The world-renowned Irish painter, Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and art editor Michael Peppiatt were close friends for over thirty years. As Peppiatt, author of Only Too Much is Enough, recounts in the introduction, the two regularly went on nocturnal "odysseys around London and Paris", "ordered extravagant vintages, toasted everyone and anyone, talked and laughed immoderately". Francis Bacon's Conversation was witty, provocative and profound.

Francis Bacon's Conversation was witty, provocative and profound.

In this volume, his longtime friend and curator has collected Bacon's most memorable aphorisms, evoking both the force of the artist's personality and the range of his interests.

Only Too Much Is Enough forms an accompaniment to Bacon's works, and conveys not only a skeptical and sometimes disturbing view of human relationships, but also sharp insights into Bacon's creative process.

Michael Peppiatt left London in 1966 for a job as art editor at Réalités and then Le Monde in Paris, where he lived at the heart of the art and literary world for the next thirty years. In 1985 he bought the magazine Art International and relaunched the magazine from his apartment in Paris. Peppiatt is the author of a dozen books, mostly about great artists.
