The story of Francis Bacon's life, told for the first time in graphic novel form, is as complex, colorful and charged as his paintings. Drawn in shades of purple, red, yellow and blue, the book's narrative draws on the tragic events of Bacon's childhood and youth, which are reflected in his art.

Divided into thematic and chronological sections, the novel highlights the predominant influences of Bacon's life and times: his early autodidactism and estrangement from family, and his struggles to find his way as a surrealist painter.

The book traces Bacon's gradual success in post-war Europe, his powerful and often violent romantic relationships, his dogged search for meaning in his work. Alternating between full-page illustrations and smaller works with captions, Portolano portrays not only the well-known details of Bacon's biography, but also his inner life - the dreams, fears and obsessions that were also central to his oeuvre.

The author and illustrator is Italian, Cristina Portolano, graphic designer and illustrator of books, magazines and websites.
