The first monograph dedicated to one of today's leading Indian visual artists, Shilpa Gupta (b. 1976), who works with installation and sculpture, photography and web-based art. Shilpa Gupta is internationally known for her deep and socially engaged multifaceted practice. A keen observer of everyday life, she creates videos, interactive installations, sculptures and participatory performances, stimulating the viewer to reflect on how places and people are defined and the meaning of belonging. Louisiana presented Gupta in 2009/10 and she is represented in the museum's collection.
With a clear political awareness, both of her own origins and of global world citizenship, Shilpa Gupta creates images that seem strongly place- and culture-specific. Her work is an ongoing exploration of how human actions and interactions are subject to a range of external and internal influences, from socio-political constructs to personal relationships and technology.
The monograph on Shilpa Gupta is written by three experts: Alexandra Munroe, Curatorial Director at the Guggenheim in Abu Dhabi and Senior Curator of Asian Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Nav Haq, associate curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp and Elvira Dyangani Ose, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona.
