Painting Photography Painting is the first collection of essays by critic, theorist, and professor of art history at Yale, Carol Armstrong, bringing together writings that encompass the many turning points of her academic work, including French painting, early photography, feminist theory, and the representation of women and gender in the visual arts.
In the book's title essay, Armstrong asks of Ellen Gallagher's 2008 painting, An Experiment of Usual Opportunity, which depicts a barely visible sea creature created from ink, graphite, oil, varnish and variously cut paper, “in what sense is this painting precisely? «
This investigation of the nature of the medium itself runs like a thread through the book's wide-ranging essays and ties together a number of different works on paper "inscribed, drawn, printed, photographed and variously pierced and punctured".
