The Akari Light 1A table lamp was designed by the Japanese-American artist and landscape architect, Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) back in 1951 and reissued by the Swiss brand, Vitra. The lamp is part of Noguchi's famous Akari Light Sculpture collection and is made by hand in the special Japanese washi paper (rice paper): "The hardness of the electric light is thus transformed through the magic of the paper back to the light of our origin - the sun", which Noguchi himself formulated it.
Isamu Noguchi's work is unusually multifaceted - from art to industrial design. Since 2002, Vitra has produced reproductions of several of Noguchi's designs in collaboration with the Isamu Noguchi Foundation in New York, where Noguchi also lived and worked for many years.
