Sunshine & Noir - Art in LA 1960-1997, published in conjunction with the Louisiana exhibition of the same name in 1997. The book/exhibition catalog looks at the art and artists that define art in Los Angeles, and features full-color examples of works from more than 50 Los Angeles artists, an in-depth chronology, interviews, biographies and essays by major critics, such as Mike Davis.
Artistic production in LA was and is certainly also influenced by the international currents that have shaped and are shaping other American art capitals such as New York. But the art of the West Coast has also bred and nurtured indigenous styles that have emerged on the international art scene.
Among the artists included are Chris Burden, Richard Diebenkorn, David Hockney, Dennis Hopper, Mike Kelley, Raymond Pettibon, Lari Pittman and Alexis Smith.
