David Hockney: Normandy Portraits - illustrations of around 40 works by the English artist, David Hockney (b. 1937). The works here feature acrylic on canvas images that Hockney painted in his studio in Normandy between 2020 and 2022 – depicting his friends and visitors, including his partner JP, pop star sensation Harry Styles and the artist himself. The catalog accompanies the major exhibition, David Hockney: Drawing From Life at the National Portrait Gallery in London, 2 November 2023 - 21 January 2024.
These works by Hockney highlight the continuing importance of portraiture in his practice and demonstrate his feeling that 'drawings and paintings ... are much better than photographs in giving you a sense of the person'.
Hockney returned to painting after an intensive period depicting the Normandy landscape using an iPad. The portraits were painted quickly and directly on the canvas without signature. As Hockney has said, 'making a portrait slowly is a bit of a contradiction'.
