Originally, George Condo (b. 1957) flirted with both the visual arts and music, but after a meeting with Jean-Michel Basquiat, he chose to focus wholeheartedly on painting and drawing and became part of the wild art scene in New York only in the 1980s .

Here Condo came close to painters such as Basquiat and Keith Haring, writers such as William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, and he worked among other things. at Warhol's Factory applying diamond dust to silkscreens. At the same time, he came up with his own painterly expression, which he called 'Artificial Realism'.

These are strange hybrids, where he mixes input from the great masters of art history – he is particularly fascinated by artists such as Velazquez, Frans Hals, Manet, Picasso and Guston – with elements from American pop art. "Picasso meets Looney Tunes," it has been said of him. But Condo does not paraphrase, he masters his material, distorts and renews it so that it escapes and becomes his own: inventive, original, often macabre.
