Exhibition poster with the work, Nuka and his uncle, (2017), by the Chinese artist, Liu Xiadong, (b. 1963), from Louisiana's 2009 exhibition. In 2019, Louisiana showed a condensed, smaller exhibition of paintings and drawings by one of China's greatest contemporary artists, Liu Xiaodong. His intense and often very large paintings masterfully depict people and destinies who often live on the fringes of our modern, globalized world.
At the Louisiana exhibition, it was Liu Xiaodong's stay in Uummannaq, Greenland, that was the focal point and not least his meeting with the both cool and vulnerable children in the settlement's orphanage – the northernmost of its kind in the world.
Nuka and his Uncle, 2017, is precisely one of the large paintings in this series that depicts the children's conditions against the background of both a threatened prison culture and the magnificent Greenlandic culture.
