Francis Bacon's work can only be categorized with difficulty, but he has had an impact on a generation of other, younger painters, e.g. Baelitz, Kiefer, Chia and Clemente.

Bacon's artistic roots can be found in interwar surrealism and since the 1940s he has developed his strongly personal style - described as a kind of "figurative action-painting", which contains a synthesis of violence and beauty, a simultaneously brutal but also tender presence.
