Revelations brings additional context to the best-known works. We get snippets of statements from Arbus, insights into selection processes - which of a number of recordings Arbus ends up choosing. We see the large walls in the studio with collages of images of all types – also by other artists from whom Arbus has bought works as part of his identification of themes. And not least a 100-page chronology of Arbus' life course.

Diane Arbus' distinctive black-and-white photographs revolutionized the art of portraiture by virtue of their style and wide choice of subjects. Working primarily in and around New York City, Arbus chose his subjects—couples, children, nudists, suburban families, circus performers, and celebrities, to name just a few—for their distinctiveness. "I wanted to photograph all people," she wrote in a letter to a friend in 1960.

Diane Arbus sought to depict, with a wealth of vivid detail, a wide range of human diversity at a time when visual culture otherwise strove to emphasize uniformity. The direct, downright defiant looks with which the people she portrayed meet the viewer are refreshing to this day – they evoke both recognition, empathy and discomfort.
