Membership price: €64,85

Face to Face presents a selection of portraits of artists by other artists, namely some of the most prominent photographers of our time: Tacita Dean, Brigitte Lacombe and Catherine Opie. Their diverse and characteristic work here examines different approaches to the portrait as a genre and navigates the incipient field between the intimate and the public. Catherie Opie is also in Louisiana's collection and the museum was the setting for a well-attended exhibition with Opie in 2016 - Illumination.

The three artists use their tool, the camera, differently: Dean exploits the film medium's capacity for duration. Lacombe takes his cameras out on assignment and Opie works in the tradition of studio photography.

Face to Face offers an opportunity to look closely at embracing, intimate and resonant portraits of the thinkers and creators these artists have encountered across music, painting, photography, film and literature - among them: Hilton Als, Maya Angelou, Richard Avedon, Joan Didion, David Hockney, Joan Jonas, Fran Lebowitz, Patti Smith, Kara Walker and many more.

Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York , Face to Face features essays by the exhibition's curator, Helen Molesworth, and by artist and writer Jarrett Earnest.
