The candles are made from plant-based materials such as sumac wax, rice husks and rapeseed oil – a tradition that dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when beeswax was unknown to Japanese artisans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-end=\"1058\" data-start=\"775\"\u003e Production of the candles starts early in the morning, where raw wax is melted in large cauldrons heated with local wood from the Noto Peninsula.
