In the years 1945-1975, Danish furniture design experienced a veritable boom. After the end of the Second World War, there is progress in both the economy, production equipment and demand from consumers, and the Danish furniture designers and manufacturers are ready to deliver.
The book covers all the great Danish design personalities – Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Børge Mogensen, Kjærholm, Panton and many others – and describes all the new trends and manufacturing possibilities in furniture design: lamination, bending and casting, one work and folding "nomad" furniture, construction furniture and storage systems, cool steel furniture and brightly colored hippie furniture, children's furniture and functional office furniture.
The introduction outlines the historical prerequisites – especially the English Windsor chair, the shaker furniture, the Chinese chair and the domestic Klint school – and in the epilogue threads are drawn up to today: the return of the Danish furniture classics as vintage objects and their status within the retro wave and the design trend New Nordic is described, just as the importance, identity and validity of the furniture classics in relation to the globalized world is assessed.
