Firelei Báez, Trust Memory Over History , catalog published in conjunction with Louisiana's Fall 2023 Exposition.
The power and energy that emanates from the works of Dominican-American artist Firelei Báez (born 1981) is overwhelming. Her art is based on contradictions and ambiguities, where beauty intertwines with violence, personal perspectives with grand historical narratives, and Caribbean mythology with science fiction. Instead of replacing truth with fiction, or land and sea charts with myth, her work creates a complexity of multi-layered fictions that collectively shape our world.
The exhibition catalogue, Firelei Báez: Trust Memory Over History , contains text contributions by Warsan Shire, Katrine Rasmussen Kielsen and Marta Fernandéz Campa and a conversation between the artist and curator Mathias Ussing Seeberg.
The catalog is richly illustrated, 94 pp. + foldover. Edited by Malou Wedel Bruun, Amalie Marie Laustsen and Mathias Ussing Seeberg.
