It was probably Picasso's international reputation that meant he was largely left alone by the Nazis during their occupation of Paris. Much of Picasso's work from the period symbolically recounts the war and the deprivations during the occupation. Dark, gray tones. Naturally, in contrast to his colorful works after the liberation of Paris, in June 1944.

Along with the work Homage to the Spaniards , (1947), the Mortuary is a memorial to the Spanish republicans who were killed in France during the occupation.

Louisiana has a special relationship with Picasso and the museum's first major Picasso exhibition took place back in 1968. Throughout its more than 60-year history, Louisiana has held six more exhibitions with the great master – most recently, Picasso Ceramics, in 2018.
