Prime - Art's Next Generation , provides a snapshot of 107 notable artists in contemporary art - all born after 1980: Who's who and what's next? The artists are selected by a new generation of art experts appointed by Phaidon's editors.
The book presents renowned artists such as Rachel Rose, Tschabalala Self and Christina Quarles. There are artists who have already made a significant impact on permanent collections, gallery exhibitions and auction records around the world.
The reader also encounters British painter Jadé Fadojutimi's work, I Present Your Royal Highness (2018), which, when acquired by Tate in 2019, made Fadojutimi the youngest artist in the museum's collection at the time. Other pages are dedicated to Avery Singer, whose untitled 2018 canvas sold for more than four million dollars at auction last June.
There's Cy Gavin, the young American painter who debuted in London via a solo exhibition at David Zwirner in December; Lina Lapelyte, whose climate change opera won the Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Biennale. And we meet Tyler Mitchell, who became the first black photographer to grace the cover of Vogue when he photographed Beyoncé for the magazine in 2018.
