The candles are made from plant-based materials such as sumac wax, rice husks and rapeseed oil – a tradition that dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when beeswax was unknown to Japanese artisans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e Production of the candles starts early in the morning, where raw wax is melted in large cauldrons heated with local wood from the Noto Peninsula. The melted wax is then poured into wooden or metal molds, and the final shape of the candle is completed by hand with a small knife, ensuring each candle has a perfect finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e The city of Nanao has historically been an important center for candle production, with raw materials such as sumac wax and washi paper being brought to the city and distributed throughout Japan via the Kitamae ships.
