Diane Arbus's striking black-and-white photographs revolutionized portraiture through their style and wide range of subjects. Working primarily in and around New York City, Arbus chose her subjects—couples, children, nudists, suburban families, circus performers, and celebrities, to name a few—for their uniqueness. "I wanted to photograph all people," she wrote in a letter to a friend in 1960.

Diane Arbus sought to depict a wide range of human diversity with a wealth of vivid detail at a time when visual culture tended to emphasize sameness. The direct, even defiant gazes with which the people she portrayed meet the viewer are refreshing to this day – they evoke both recognition, empathy and discomfort.
