Asger Jorn - Nocturne III
Choose options
Louisiana Poster Nocturne III by the world-renowned Danish painter, Asger Jorn (1914-1973). Asger Jorn is one of the pivotal figures in 20th-century Danish art, and his works hold a special place at Louisiana.
Asger Jorn's paintings address things we all contemplate: life, death, love, and happiness. His works are populated by fantastical creatures who, like us, are born and die, love, cry, laugh, and so on.
Jorn was in every way a boundary-pushing artist – both concerning international art life, the COBRA movement, the Situationist International, and much more, but also in relation to his thoughts on the artist's position in society.
Asger Jorn's challenges to the substance of art, to materials, were legendary and lifelong. He worked with and processed all known categories within visual art, and had a particular eye for precisely breaking down categorisations, if it was at all possible for him.
Jorn was critical of an exalted perception of art, and he deliberately challenged high culture with banality, irony, humour, and anti-aesthetics.
Like the generation of post-war artists, Asger Jorn insisted on the dream of community, socialism, and a universal, abstract visual language that could help unite war-torn Europe.
