Choose options
Color Unbound is published for the major exhibition at the Grand Palais and highlights Henri Matisse's original and vibrant works from his final years. Combining full-page reproductions of Matisse's works with rarely seen photographs of his studio by photographers such as Adant, Capa, Carone, Cartier-Bresson, Sima, and Maywald, the book, through expert commentary, offers insight into his creative energy and the intimate interplay between art and life.
After a major operation in 1941 left him physically frail, Matisse saw this as an opportunity to achieve "the greatest progress in his life" and entered a particularly productive period until his death in 1954. During this time, he created some of his greatest masterpieces, including the Rosary Chapel in Vence and the luminous cut-out gouaches like Jazz.
