Linda Nochlin's famous essay examines the historical and structural reasons why women artists have not been given the same opportunities as men throughout history, and it rejects the myth of the Great (male) Artist with innate, brilliant abilities. The essay is a classic in feminist art criticism and has had a great impact on art history and gender studies.
Nochlin (1931–2017), an American art historian and feminist, was a central figure in the development of feminist art theory. She taught one of the first university courses on women in art and co-curated landmark exhibitions such as Global Feminisms and Women Artists: 1550–1950 .
The book is illustrated and includes a foreword by the Danish artist Anna Stahn.
