Louisiana print with the work, Invisible sun (algorithm 6, third letter form) 2014, by the American artist, Julie Mehretu (b. 1970). In addition to a series of drawings at Louisiana's On-Line exhibition in 2006, Louisiana's exhibition of 20 of Merethus's works in 2007 became the first display of the artist's works in Scandinavia. The work is printed on extra strong, uncoated paper in A3 size (29.7 x 42 cm).
Julie Mehretu was born in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, in 1970, raised in the USA, lives and works in New York. Her original and at the same time abstract, concrete and aesthetic style has attracted a lot of attention. The artist's task is to make visible the complexity of the global world. "Putting the world into the world" - has characterized the core of Julie Mehretu's artistic project as a critic has described it.
The many layers of line and color formations in the artist's drawings and paintings reveal volumes of perspectives, scales and levels of information, which together form a non-hierarchical cultural geometry with a jumble of details and patterns that gather into wholes and create narratives about architecture, urban plans , countries and places, and about the artist's own life, which links to places like Ethiopia, Michigan, Senegal and Rhode Island.
The result is images that more than anything capture a globalized world – as we perceive it when natural disasters, wars, sporting events, economic crises and religious events are transmitted to us through television and the Internet.
