Julie Mehretu was born in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, in 1970, raised in the United States, and lives and works in New York. Her original and at the same time abstract, concrete and aesthetic style has attracted great attention. The artist's mission is to make the complexity of the global world visible. "To put the world within the world" - this is how one critic characterized the core of Julie Mehretu's artistic project.
The many layers of line and color formations in the artist's drawings and paintings reveal multitudes of perspectives, scales, and levels of information, which together form a non-hierarchical cultural geometry with a tangle of details and patterns that come together in wholes and create stories about architecture, urban plans, countries and places, and about the artist's own life, which is linked to places such as Ethiopia, Michigan, Senegal, and Rhode Island.
The result is images that more than anything capture a globalized world – as we perceive it when natural disasters, wars, sporting events, economic crises and religious events are transmitted to us through television and the internet.
