Shibori kit from the Danish brand, Maibritt Amsler. Shibori is in many ways reminiscent of what we know as wrap-batik. Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique, where the dyeing is systematically excluded from certain areas of pieces of fabric. The Shibori technique has been known in Japan for more than 800 years and has been used especially for kimonos throughout time.

___

Shibori comes from the word 'shiboru', which means to twist or pinch. The fabric is tied, pinched, sewn or twisted before dyeing, creating areas that are not dyed, often in repeating patterns.

There are several different methods within shibori. My kit is an introduction to the part of shibori called Atajime. In Atajime, wooden blocks are used in different geometric shapes and the result is more graphic than other shibori techniques.

Maibritt Amsler is a graduate of the Danish School of Design, runs a design studio from Copenhagen's Meatpacking District, prints screenprints in Copenhagen NV and holds workshops on request in various printing techniques.
