Form and Refine

Form. Material. Craft

Form & Refine was founded in 2018 by furniture architects Helle Herman Mortensen and Jonas Herman Pedersen, who are behind Herman Studio, and CEO Lasse Lund Lauridsen. Their philosophy is based on respect for pure, natural materials that are locally sourced and processed with great craftsmanship.

“Each product celebrates functionality, quality, and refined form, uniting understated elegance with thoughtful construction.”

Materials are the company's great passion, and each product is designed to highlight the material's own character. Each product is developed to be used, appreciated and, not least, passed down through generations.

The collections are created with a timeless perspective – soft in their expression, honest in detail, and with a focus on functionality, simplicity and longevity, with the Nordic design language as a guiding principle.

Materials are chosen based on their durability, longevity, and how they interact with daily use. Natural materials typically have a lower environmental impact compared to many synthetic alternatives, and the company prioritizes those that age gracefully, develop a beautiful patina over time, and contribute to products that can last for many years. Examples include wood, stoneware, steel, and alpaca.

The company works with pure, natural materials, and each product is manufactured locally. Therefore, Form & Refine collaborates with skilled and carefully selected artisans and manufacturers, where long-term and responsible partnerships help preserve traditional craftsmanship techniques and support local professional communities.

Recognizable shapes

Herman Studio was founded in 2012 by architects Helle Herman Mortensen and Jonas Herman Pedersen. The studio's work ranges from textile, ceramic, lighting, and furniture design to interior design projects.

A recurring characteristic of their approach is a sharp focus on the contours of objects. Each design is developed with a clear and recognizable silhouette, where craftsmanship is allowed to shine through, while the expression remains simple, calm, and easily legible.

The design process is based on a deep understanding of construction. Ideas are continuously developed with sketches, models, and prototypes, where function and form are tested and refined in close dialogue with the material. This approach is evident in the design of the Journal Organiser – a flexible side table created to function in many different spaces, where the gap between the frame and the top provides space for storing magazines, newspapers, bottles, oils, or herbs.

The BEAM Collection

Both the benches and shelves in the BEAM collection are designed to last for many years and bring peace, balance, and natural harmony to the home. The wall shelves are ideal for both storage and for highlighting selected objects. The distinctive H-shaped side panels are a constructive detail, emphasized by the rounded edges on each shelf, highlighting the excellent, solid craftsmanship.

“The inspiration for the Beam Shelf comes from architecture and construction. The wide side panels embrace and support the shelves, which is emphasized by the rounded details on each shelf.”
