Because – Sophie Calle

The artist book Because by Sophie Calle combines text and loose photographs, where she shares both her inner thoughts behind the works and the stories from the moments before a picture is taken. Words have always been central to Sophie Calle's practice, known for her photographic works often including text panels with her own writings. The photographs are hidden between the pages and revealed later, which reverses the traditional relationship between image and text and shows how words shape our experience. In this way, Calle overturns the natural relationship between image and text, and instead focuses attention on how words can influence our perception of a photograph.

The revised edition contains 39 loose photos as well as other visual material and is beautifully executed with Japanese binding and orange fabric cover.
