In this book, William Kentridge explains how his works came into being – from the first photograph he took, through studies in drama and posters for theatre productions, to his work in the film industry. He shows how intuitions, connections and objects move from his studio to opera houses and exhibition spaces, how to work with music, and how this work can connect with the world outside.
Kentridge resists the purely rational and celebrates the joy of the absurd and of self-deception. When certainty fails, he makes room for ambiguity and doubt and allows even "the less good idea" to unfold. With both humour and generosity, he explores how he arrives at a visual language on a larger scale.
William Kentridge’s work The Refusal of Time was first shown at Louisiana in spring 2016 alongside the museum’s recent acquisitions. It has since become a major work in the museum’s collection. The work consists of a 5-channel video with sound (duration: 28 min), four megaphones and, on the floor in the centre, a large mechanical bellows (“Elephant”).
