This inspiring book explores artists’ unique relationship with architecture through 50 exceptional 20th-century homes. Some of the artists designed their own houses, while others worked closely with architects or converted existing buildings into personal and creative spaces for their lives and work.
Architecture journalist Harriet Thorpe presents a series of extraordinary homes and tells the stories of the artists who lived in them. The book shows how art and architecture can influence one another and shape the spaces we live in.
Among the homes featured are Barbara Hepworth’s studio, Georgia O’Keeffe’s ranch in New Mexico, the homes of the Bauhaus masters in Germany, and the homes and studios of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera in Mexico City. The book also includes essays on topics such as the role of the home in modern art and the significance of the artist’s home as a museum and cultural heritage site.
