In no other artistic avant-garde movement did women play such an important role and appear so vocally as in Surrealism. But while the male protagonists of surrealism, René Magritte, Salvador Dali, Joan Miró and Max Ernst, to name just the most well-known, have gained a lot of attention, few today have a wider knowledge of the female surrealists.

When the Surrealist movement originated in 1920s Paris, all official members were men. Many female artists were part of the inner circle – not only as partners, muse and models, but as actively performing artists.

In this richly illustrated catalogue, published in the Louisiana Revue series for the exhibition Fantastic Women, the story is told of the large group of female artists who, all with their distinctive characteristics, contributed to expanding the movement's pictorial universe, but who have been forgotten when art history had to is written.

Texts by Ingrid Pfeiffer and Tere Arqc as well as 30 artist biographies.
