The Python chair from the Norwegian design brand Matre, designed by Peter Opsvik in 1975, combines sculptural form, comfort, and movement in a timeless design. Python is characterized by its open and playful expression in steel, wood, and a laced seat. Inspired by a coiled spring, it is designed to promote movement and varied sitting positions, while uniting comfort, durability, and a distinctive design expression.
About Matre
Matre is a Norwegian design brand created from a deep fascination with Norwegian cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and the design traditions that previously made Norway a significant voice in the international furniture industry. The brand was founded in 2023 by Elizabeth Matre-Aas and her husband Ole Kristian Bergsjø Aas with a desire to rediscover and revitalize an almost forgotten era in Norwegian design history.
Matre works to rebuild and strengthen the Norwegian furniture industry by putting Norwegian design back on the international map. Through collaboration, dialogue, and initiatives such as Design Salon, the brand actively contributes to creating new energy in the design field and industry. Design Salon is an initiative from Matre, created as a vibrant meeting place for Norwegian design, industry, and creativity.
Every product is created with a focus on quality, material awareness, and craftsmanship. Matre operates from a holistic approach, where consideration for nature, people, craft traditions, and the local communities it is a part of, is a natural part of the process. At the same time, the brand places great emphasis on the human values behind the production — with a focus on authenticity, community, and development for the individual.
Matre has been awarded the "Made in Norway" origin mark by Innovation Norway — a seal of quality that confirms that the products are manufactured in Norway and meet high demands for responsible and transparent production principles.
