Pablo Picasso – Le dejeuner sur l'herbe (1961)

Louisiana poster with the work, Le dejeuner sur L'herbe - Lunch on the Grass, (1961) by the Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, (1881-1973). Picasso portrays himself as the painter and his wife, Jaqueline, as the model, while a mythical creature of a girl strolls around in the pond behind, as a nod to Manet.

Lunch in the Greenery is painted in rich green and deep black colors, and it almost cries out to be complemented by similar works in oil, ink or graphics.

From the summer of 1959 and for three years thereafter, Pablo Picasso devoted himself intensely to the motif in Edouard Manet's landmark painting from 1863, Luncheon on the Green . The motif inspired Picasso to no less than 27 paintings and around 150 drawings – as well as several sculptures and ceramic works, in which he further varied the motif.

With the help of friends and museum visitors, Louisiana's founder, Knud W. Jensen, succeeded in acquiring Lunch in the Greenery in the early 1980s as the first Picasso work for Louisiana's collection. Since then, more have been added.
