___
In the video work, Ever is Overall , a woman, "armed" with a tropical flower, is seen strolling in slow motion along the sidewalk while she smashes car windows with the flower.
Yet Pipilotti Rist succeeds, especially through tempo, music and close-ups of flowers, in transforming a seemingly destructive act into a kind of hopeful and redemptive gesture. Rist's art can seem both challenging and provocative, but also full of joy and humor.
She was actually baptized Elisabeth Charlotte Rist, but already at a young age she took the stage name, Pipilotti, as a greeting to Astrid Lindgren's anarchic and free-thinking Pippi Longstocking.
One of Pipilotti Rist's first large-format video works is Ever is Overall . The work has become an iconic reference point over the years, and many may think of Beyoncé's music video, 'Hold Up', from her 2016 album, Lemonade.
