Louisiana Review published in connection with the exhibition of the surrealist, Spanish-Mexican painter Remedios Varo (1908-1963) held from September 2026 to January 2027.
Remedios Varo, who declared that "the world of dreams and the real world are the same," sought in an almost alchemical way to combine vastly different techniques, fantasies, and conceptions in her paintings, which have an enigmatic, cinematic character and often incorporate hybrid creatures.
She utilized surrealism's chance-based processes but was at the same time incredibly precise, meticulous, and classical in her painterly expression and in her color scheme, which has clear references to Italian painting from the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
