Louisiana poster featuring the work Encuentro, 1959, by Remedios Varo, published in connection with the exhibition of the surrealist, Spanish-Mexican painter Remedios Varo (Sept. 18). Remedios Varo, who declared that "the dream world and the real world are the same," attempted, in an almost alchemical manner, to combine vastly different techniques, fantasies, and ideas in her paintings, which have an enigmatic, cinematic quality and often incorporate hybrid creatures.
She employed surrealism's chance-based processes, but was simultaneously incredibly precise, meticulous, and classical in her painterly expression and in her use of color, which has clear references to Italian painting from the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
