Remedios Varo, who declared that "the dream world and the real world are the same," attempted in an almost alchemical way to combine vastly different techniques, fantasies, and ideas in her paintings, which have an enigmatic, cinematic character and often incorporate hybrid creatures.
She utilized surrealism's chance-based processes, but was at the same time incredibly precise, meticulous, and classical in her painterly expression and use of color, which has clear references to Italian painting from the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
In Exploración de las fuentes del río Orinoco, the traveler's arrival at the river's source is accompanied by a flood created by the painting's own medium. The work revolves around the narrative endeavor to find an inexhaustible source of water.
