Louisiana poster featuring the work Hallazgo (Discovery), 1956, by Remedios Varo, published in connection with the exhibition of the surrealist Spanish-Mexican painter Remedios Varo (Sep. 18). Remedios Varo, who declared that "the dream world and the real world are the same," attempted in an almost alchemical way to combine vastly different techniques, fantasies, and ideas in her paintings, which have an enigmatic, cinematic character and often incorporate hybrid creatures.
She employed surrealism's chance-based processes but was simultaneously incredibly precise, meticulous, and classical in her painterly expression and use of color, which has clear references to Italian painting from the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
