Exhibition poster featuring the work Mujer saliendo del psicoanalista (Woman Leaving the Psychoanalyst's Office), 1960, by Remedios Varo, published in connection with the exhibition of the surrealist Spanish-Mexican painter Remedios Varo (September 18). Remedios Varo, who declared that "the dream world and the real world are the same," attempted in an almost alchemical way to combine widely different techniques, fantasies, and conceptions in her paintings, which have an enigmatic, cinematic character and often incorporate hybrid creatures.
She utilized surrealism's chance-based processes but was at the same time incredibly precise, meticulous, and classical in her painterly expression and in her color scheme, which has clear references to Italian painting from the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
There is also a clear feminist dimension in Varo's surrealist imagery. Her female figures, who often bear her own features, are active creators – explorers, alchemists, and scientists. They challenge traditional notions of women's place in the world and instead point towards a unique female spirituality and intellectual self-determination.
