Remedios Varo – Woman Leaving the Psychoanalyst (1960) Sale price€64,95
Louisiana poster featuring the work Mujer saliendo del psicoanalista (Woman Leaving the Psychoanalyst's Office), 1960, by Remedios Varo, published in conjunction with the exhibition of the surrealist, Spanish-Mexican painter Remedios Varo (Sept. 18). Remedios Varo, who declared that "the dream world and the real world are the same," attempted in an almost alchemical way to combine widely differing techniques, fantasies, and ideas in her paintings, which have an enigmatic, cinematic character and often incorporate hybrid creatures.

She made use of surrealism's chance-based processes but was simultaneously incredibly precise, meticulous, and classical in her painterly expression and in her colour scheme, which has clear references to Italian painting from the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.

There is also a clear feminist dimension in Varo's surrealist imagery. Her female figures, who often bear her own features, are active creators – explorers, alchemists, and researchers. They challenge traditional notions of women's place in the world and instead point towards a particular female spirituality and intellectual self-determination.
