Exhibition poster with the work Naturaleza muerta resucitando (Still Life Resurrecting), 1963, by Remedios Varo, published in connection with the exhibition of the surrealist, Spanish-Mexican painter Remedios Varo (September 18). Remedios Varo, who declared that "the dream world and the real world are one and the same," attempted in an almost alchemical way to combine widely different techniques, fantasies, and ideas in her paintings, which have an enigmatic, cinematic character and often incorporate hybrid creatures.
She used surrealism's chance-based processes but was at the same time incredibly precise, meticulous, and classical in her painterly expression and in her use of color, which has clear references to Italian painting from the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
