Exhibition poster with the work, Figures in Landscape - Figures in Landscape (1977), by American artist, Roy Lichtenstein, (1923-1997). The poster was printed in connection with Louisiana's exhibition with the American pop artist. Lichtenstein has been exhibited at Louisiana on several occasions and Figures in landscape is in the museum's collection.
Louisiana first presented Roy Lichtenstein in 1971, when he was part of the exhibition, American Art 1950-1970, again in 2004, when the museum displayed his works in a comprehensive retrospective exhibition, and in 2013 as part of the exhibition, Pop Art Design .
Lichtenstein is particularly known for his paintings based on American cartoons from the 1940s and 1950s. Figures in Landscape clearly reflects Roy Lichtenstein's iconic style, and was painted after the artist had visited Louisiana in the 1970s.
This is far from a landscape picture in the traditional sense. A woman in profile, who is presumably the artist's own wife, is included as a motif together with a column and a section with a tie knot, and although in the picture there is a horizon line with a view to Øresund, a sailboat and two seagulls, the motif appears rather as a chaotic puzzle that, due to the aesthetics of the printing technique and the monumental size of the image, is most easily assembled from a distance.
Along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and James Rosenquist, Roy Lichtenstein is one of the most significant figures within the Pop Art movement. His imagery is inspired by the schematics and surfaces of the printed matter with contours and dots - as also reproduced on the poster.
