The candlesticks are made in Sidsel’s workshop in Lejre. In creating them, Sidsel Holsteen has drawn inspiration from silhouettes and poppy pods. The candlesticks have an organic expression, and she has made a point of ensuring that each one is different, so every single piece has its own character.
The candlesticks are available in two sizes, 22 cm and 16.5 cm, and in three colors: Flint, Mother-of-pearl, and Cloudy Gray. Each candlestick has been glazed twice. During firing, the glazes melt together, creating a surface with rich color variations. The Cloudy Gray glaze is partly made from leftover glaze material from the workshop – a choice made with a focus on minimizing waste in the production of new ceramics.
Sidsel Holsteen (b. 1995) graduated from The Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design and Conservation (2019–2023). In her ceramic practice, she wishes to honor tradition and fine craftsmanship, throwing and casting functional objects, often fired in a wood kiln. At the same time, she is driven by a desire to challenge ceramic tradition by creating objects that are not normally made in clay.
Sidsel works in the intersection of design and sculpture, taking her starting point in everyday objects such as candlesticks, shelves, chamber pots, and lampshades. Through creative constraints, she transforms them into ceramic works that play with and challenge function.
Five words characterize Holsteen’s practice: Humor, Impractical, Functional, Tradition, Renewal. The terms stand in contrast to each other, but together they frame her artistic approach, where she explores the many possibilities of clay.
