Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement is the most comprehensive treatment of the lives, ideas, and works of the remarkable group of women who played a central role in Surrealism. Artists such as Leonora Carrington, Léonor Fini, Frida Kahlo, and Dorothea Tanning became prominent figures of their time as they sought artistic independence and their own form of spiritual liberation within the revolutionary universe of Surrealism.

The book depicts their lives and art against the backdrop of the turbulent decades of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, as well as the war that forced Surrealism into exile in places like New York and Mexico.

The author, Whitney Chadwick, who also wrote the acclaimed book Women, Art, and Society, personally interviewed and corresponded with many of the artists during her research. This revised edition contains a new preface by art historian Dawn Ades, excerpts from previously unpublished texts, and a wide range of illustrations that had never before been published at the time of the book's release.
