Shibori kit from the Danish brand, Maibritt Amsler. Shibori is in many ways reminiscent of what we know as wrap batik. Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique in which work is done with a systematic exclusion of the dye in certain areas of pieces of fabric. The Shibori technique has been known in Japan for more than 800 years and has been mainly used for kimonos.

Shibori originates from the word 'shiboru' which means to twist or squeeze. The fabric is tied, pinched, sewn or twisted before dyeing and in this way creates areas that are not dyed, often in repeating patterns.

There are several different methods within shibori. My kit is an introduction to the part of shibori called Atajime. In Atajime, wooden blocks are used in different geometric shapes and the result is more graphic than other shibori techniques.
