Many have stood nailed in the infinity room together with the huge polka-dotted pumpkins. But fewer may know Kusama's story. You can get it now: Art critic Robert Shore delves into Yayoi Kusama's life in his book.

From a difficult childhood in Japan, through the wild, formative years in New York with pop art and minimalism, the return to Japan in the 70s and up to the later decades, when Kusama is widely recognized as a deeply original, living legend on the global art scene.

We hear how Kusama tackles challenges with mental illness. About her love for especially the large pumpkins and the polka dots that spread from paintings and sculptures to entire rooms, walls and ceilings - and for herself - in the most surprising and inspiring installations and paintings.

Kusama's work, Gleaming Lights of the Souls (2008), with its sensuous space of mirrors, water on the floor and lamps that change colors, is today a beloved part of Louisiana's permanent collection.

You can learn more about where Kusama gets the drive for the exuberant sensations in Robert Shore's book, Yayoi Kusama, from the Lives of the Artists series. Shore is editor of the art magazine Elephant and writes about art in the English dailies the Sunday Times, the Guardian and Metro.
