Make your own prints on t-shirts or tote bags with a screen printing kit from the Danish brand, Maibritt Amsler. Serigraphy, also known as screen printing or frame printing, is a printing method that originated in Japan. The printing method gained traction in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century and was primarily used by sign painters and in the wallpaper industry. Later, artists began to use the technique as an art form in original prints.

The technique is well suited for printing on tote bags, T-shirts, for up-cycling recycled clothing or for simple patterns printed as 'repeating patterns' on larger pieces of fabric.

In addition to fabric, serigraphy can be printed on cardboard, paper and wood

When working with serigraphy, stencils are used to block the color where you don't want your motif. Stencils are made in traditional serigraphy using light-sensitive emulsion and UV light. In traditional serigraphy, chemicals are typically used which are not good to have around at home.

The serigraphy kit here is chemical-free and therefore stencils are made by cutting out the motif by hand on water-repellent and environmentally friendly stencil paper. It's an easy way to work with screen printing at home on the dining table.

The easy serigraphy with stencil paper has some limitations on the level of detail, but contains a sea of possibilities once you have become familiar with the stencil tank and the scalpel.

Maibritt Amsler graduated from Denmark's Design School (KADK), runs a design studio from Copenhagen's Kødby, prints serigraphs in Copenhagen NV and holds workshops to order in various printing techniques.
