The book introduced the concept of the "decisive moment," when all the elements of a photograph come together to create the perfect composition. Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004) was born in Chantelou-en-Brieer, France. He originally studied painting and began photography in the 1930s. Cartier-Bresson co-founded Magnum in 1947. In the late 1960s he returned to his original passion, drawing, and in 2003 established the Cartier-Bresson Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris, a year before his death.
