Saul Leiter (1923-2013), now widely recognized as one of the world's greatest photographers, was relatively unheralded until he was rediscovered by curators and critics in the early 1980s. Saul Leiter's images evoke the flow and rhythm of life on the streets of mid-century New York in luminous color, at a time when his contemporaries were photographing in black and white. His complex and impressionistic photographs are as much about evoking an atmosphere as capturing the decisive moment.
Upon his death in 2013, Saul Leiter left a collection of more than 40,000 color slides, of which only a fraction had seen the light of day. This book showcases seventy-six newly discovered images from Leiter's extraordinary photographic treasure trove, published here for the first time.
The images are curated by Margit Erb and Michael Parillo of the Saul Leiter Foundation and supported by texts explaining how Leiter built his slide archive and how it is now being explored, cataloged and restored.
